Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

July 7, 1955 — Don Stassen won the men’s division, and Eleanor Ostgaard the women’s division in the Flag Tournament held at the Country Club on the Fourth. Gene Miller was second in the men’s class, and a five-way tie developed for third and fourth places. In the tie were Marion Andrew, Walt Nelson, Gay Stone, Duane Wetter and Don Johnson.

July 8, 1965 — “I’ll never do that again,” was the comment of Dave McClellan, 18-year-old Tracy golfer who toured the Tracy Country Club’s nine-hole layout on Men’s Night with a record low of fiveunder par 30. The remarkable score on his second round is the lowest mark set by any local golfer since the course was established 17 years ago. Dave shot a 38 on his first nine while his partner, Chuck Peterson, hit for 37 and 38.

July 3, 1975 — Neil Daniels pitched the Tracy VFW to a 6-3 win over Morgan. He allowed just five hits. Kevin Radtke, Joe Schotzko and Jim Drackley each had two RBI.

July 4, 1985 — Aster Johnson and Peg Turner were the winners in the St. Mary’s centennial horseshoe tournament Saturday in men’s and women’s divisions. Second in men’s was Mark Rowell, followed by Lon Turner and Jiggs Buyck. Pauline Radke was second in women’s play.

July 5, 1995 — Looking for someone to beat up on at the neighborhood basketball court? Don’t play against Luke Ostgaard. The Tracy High School sophomore was the winner in a “one-on-one” basketball competition involving more than 100 other athletes. The contest took place at the Clem Haskins Basketball Camp at St. Thomas University. “It was a good experience,” the Tracy 15-year-old modestly explained. A total of 330 boys attended the camp, grades 7-12.

July 6, 2005 — The Tracy VFW baseball team beat Sacred Heart 5-2 at Tracy to improve to 9-4 overall and 5-2 in league play. Anthony Dolan pitched the first four innings and Taylor Rignell came on in the fifth to relieve him and get the win.

July 8, 2015 — Mason Schnaible got a complete-game shutout for the Milroy Irish last Wednesday, as the Irish blanked the Tracy Express, 4-0. The Irish scored three runs in the top of the ninth to break open a tight game on Tracy’s home field. Anthony Rohlik pitched well for the Express.
