Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers July 7, 1955 — Two Milroy girls, Annette Valentine and Lola Vetter, escaped with only their night clothes Wednesday night when fire razed the dormitory in which the girls were living in Yellowstone National Park, the girls parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erich Valentine and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Vetter learned. The girls were employed at Old Faithful cafeteria in Yellowstone since June 1, and lived at the dormitory with the other lady employees of the cafeteria.

July 8, 1965 — A 4-year-old girl became Lyon county’s second drowning victim of the year. Debra Jean Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Larson of Omaha, Nebraska, former Balaton area residents, drowned off the dock at Lake Yankton at Balaton about 4 p.m. Her body was discovered in four feet of water near the 40-foot pier. Efforts by the Balaton Fire Department and Dr. Norman Lee of Tracy failed to revive the cliild.
July 3, 1975 — The Tracy post and auxiliary unit was well represented at the State Veterans of Foreign Wars convention in St. Cloud where Art Thiegles was named junior vice-commander and Bernette Holm was sworn in as District 3 Auxiliary president. Carol Thielges, Tracy, was appointed state color guard by Betty Karnowski, Little Falls, newly-elected state auxiliary president.

July 4, 1985 — Being crowned Region 8 Dairy Princess was absolutely the last thing on the mind of Patty Zeug on June 20. The 1983 graduate of Milroy High School woke up sick that morning with the stomach flu. She didn’t feel a bit like traveling to Fairmont later that day and participating in the dairy princess competition. But despite feeling rotten and not eating all day, Patti did make it to the dairy princess judging and was selected over 11 other girls as the new regional dairy princess.

July 5, 1995 — It was with mixed feelings that Ron Brand spent Monday morning cleaning out his desk at Tracy High School. Brand unexpectedly submitted his letter of resignation to Supt. Harold Remme last Wednesday. Brand has accepted another job as principal at Norwood-Young America. The Tracy board of education is scheduled to discuss plans for Brand’s successor Wednesday morning (July 5). “I have enjoyed my five years as principal of Tracy High School but when opportunity knocks, I guess it is time to move forward,” Brand said.

July 6, 2005 — David Jones, who was hospitalized two weeks ago in Sioux Valley’s intensive care unit after being in a two-vehicle accident near Amiret, reports that he is nearly back to his old self. The sixteenyear- old Garvin resident gave family members a scare when he had to be airlifted to Sioux Falls after a collision that occurred Tuesday, June 21. The passengers in the other vehicle suffered no injuries. Doctors initially thought Jones possibly had a broken vessel in the brain, since he had gotten a large cut in his head from the accident. Luckily, Jones only had a concussion, although it was a serious one. He was released 24 hours after his admittance.

July 8, 2015 — Code RED ... Code RED! Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? Such a “mass alert and notification system” is currently being used in several Minnesota counties — but not in Lyon County. Until now, that is. After a discussion, the board voted to adopt the program in Lyon County.
