Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

July 14, 1955 — Catherine Starr ,senior this fall at Tracy High School, is the first candidate announced for queen of the annual Box Car Day celebration on Labor day. Cathy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edson Starr, will represent the Tracy fire department in the queen contest.

July 15, 1965 — John Vahle, acting Tracy postmaster since the retirement of Cornelius Vahle in May of last year, was one of among 100 postmaster officially appointed by President L.B. Johnson last week. Cornelius Vahle was appointed postmaster in July 1936 and served 28 years before taking his retirement May of last year.

July 10, 1975 — The board of directors of Tri-County Cooperative Oil Association has voted to consolidate its facilities in Tracy with a $250,000 building project on Highway 14 adjacent to the present Red Rooster Cafe and service station. Harry Zwach, board president, announced that construction of the 120 x 100 foot all-steel building will begin about Aug. 1.

July 11, 1985 — Connie Bueno, daughter of Dr. Jackson and Portia Bueno, Fergus Falls, was recently awarded second runner-up in the Miss Minnesota American Coed Pageant held June 22 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Minneapolis. Connie, age 14, competed with 119 other young women on poise, evening gown presentation, personality, swimsuit, presentation and talent. She danced a ballet for the judging. Connie attended school at St. Mary’s in Tracy.

July 13, 2005 — Fifty years ago, two rural country churches began building a structure that would unite their congregations. In April of 1955, the groundbreaking began. The weather wasn’t pleasant. “It was blowin’ like a son of a gun,” remembers Clifton Frisvold, a former member of Modum Lutheran. This weekend, the Lake Sarah Lutheran congregation will celebrate the day the cornerstone was laid 50 years ago. Sunday, the congregation is marking the 50th anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone. Bishop Jon Anderson will speak at a 10 a.m. communion worship service. A church dinner and fellowship time will follow the service. All members, former members, and friends are invited to attend. Lake Sarah Lutheran traces its roots to two country churches founded in the late 19th century by Scandinavian immigrants.

July 15, 2015 — The City of Tracy has secured a site for its planned wastewater treatment ponds. Acting at a special July 7 meeting, the city council approved a $12,000 an acre purchase option on 70 acres of farmland north of the city’s existing sewage lagoons. “I can’t stress enough the urgency of getting this done,” said former mayor Tony Peterson, who was involved in negotiations with landowners Linda and Dennis Fultz.
