Local departments respond to fatal grain bin accident

A man died after becoming trapped in a grain bin on a farmsite northeast of Milroy on Wednesday morning.

The identity of the victim had not been released at the time this edition went to press.

At 9:33 a.m., the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a man trapped in a bin, and emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at about 11:19 a.m., the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The Milroy Fire Department and First Responders were first on the scene and pulled in resources from Tracy, Walnut Grove, Lucan, Wabasso, Vesta, Marshall and Redwood Falls to assist in rescue efforts.

Tracy was paged at 9:51 a.m. Milroy Fire Chief Matt Krueger said responding to incidents like Wednesday’s is difficult because, like with a fire, every situation is different.

“You could have a game plan in your head, but until you get there, until you can assess the situation — that determines what you can and cannot do,” Krueger said. “That’s why we pulled in so many other agencies to assist.”

Krueger said the fire department trains annually on grain bin rescues.

“We work with our elevator to do some training; we have gone out to local farmers in our area and actually trained in bins,” Krueger said. “You can only train so much until a situation actually happens. You just have to be as prepared as you can be.”
