C.J. Hultquist, 81

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 3, 2001 for C.J. Hultquist of Windom, MN. Pastor Gregory Hall and Pastor Stephen Norby officiated the service which was held at the American Lutheran Church in Windom.

Caryl Jr. “C.J.” Hultquist was born March 9, 1920 in Dundee, MN to Casper J. and Alice A. (Carlson) Hultquist. He was baptized in 1920 and confirmed in 1932 at First Lutheran Church in Dundee. His education began in Dundee at District 95 and continued in Fulda for High School graduating in the class of 1937. After high school, C.J. and brother Donald built and operated the Roller Rink in Dundee.

On April 20, 1942, C.J. was inducted into the Army Air Corps at Fort Crook, NE. His training took place at Sheppard Field, TX and P-38 school in Burbank and Santa Barbara, CA. His career continued in San Diego, Glendale, Van Nuys, Oxnard and Santa Maria, CA and Camp Kilmer, NY. On Feb. 2, 1944, he sailed on the Queen Elizabeth to England and served in England at Honnington AFB until returning to the USA on the Queen Mary Nov. 9, 1945. He was discharged honorably from Camp McCoy, WI November 14 and hitched-hiked home to Tracy on November 24, 1945.

On April 27, 1943, he married Irene A. Carlson at First Lutheran Church in Dundee. After returning home from the service they made their home in Windom where he was employed by several firms in the area. C.J. worked as a mechanic for Nelson Buick; Erickson & Tibodeau Chrysler & Case; Ford Garage; Silliman Ford; Bob Stahl Ford and later Higley Ford. In a part-time capacity he worked at Amos Auto & Truck Repair. He worked at the US Post Office from 1962 to 1985, retiring March 1, 1985. In 1977 he completed building his own home fashioned from an old barn, which was a labor of love of which he was so proud.

In 1950 C.J. and Ernest Carlson built and operated Skateland Roller Drome in Windom. Throughout his years as a Windom resident, C.J. has been a vibrant member of American Lutheran Church serving in the Men's Chorus, Sunday School teacher, Luther League Leader, and was instrumental in the establishment of Saturday evening services in the Chapel. For many years, he worked as a Boy Scout leader. As a veteran, he has been a member of American Legion Post 206 of Windom. He attended reunions of the 364th Fighter Group of the 8th Air Force. Most of all, C.J.'s pride and joy were his wife, children and grandchildren. He enjoyed bow hunting, fishing, wood working projects and his loving hands which could repair anything. After retirement, C.J. and Irene enjoyed many years of traveling in their motor home, visiting family and friends.

In recent months, C.J.'s health has changed and required several hospitalizations. He died on Wednesday evening, November 28th at Windom Area Hospital at the age of 81 years, 8 months, and 19 days.

His devoted family include his wife, Irene; two children and their spouses: Larry and Carolyn Hultquist of Iquitas, Peru; and Linda and Dennis Garms of Janesville; four grandchildren: Clint and Tirzah Hultquist of Pinedale, WY; Eric and Jennifer Griffen of Sewel, NJ; Travis Garms of Denver, Co and Nicole Garms of Chicago, IL; two great-grandchildren: Brooke Hultquist and Zachary Griffen. He is also survived by a brother and two sisters: Donald and Jerry Hultquist of Burbank CA:, Genevieve and Ernest Carlson of Windom and Alicia and Bernie Morningstar of Hemet, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Interment with full military honors was held at Lakeview Cemetery, Windom. Arrangements were by the Anderson-Schmidt Funeral Home of Windom.

John Martin

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 for John Henry Martin of Balaton at the Garvin Congregational Church in Garvin, MN. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 6, 2001 at the Almlie Funeral Home in Balaton. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and a one hour visitation prior to service at the church. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Garvin, MN.

Mr. Martin died Monday, December 3, 2001 at Royal C. Johnson Memorial Hospital (VA), Sioux Falls, SD.

Arrangements are being handled by the Almlie Funeral Home of Balaton.

Laura H. Payne, 92

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 1, 2001 for Laura H. Payne at the Almie Funeral Home in Tracy. Pastor Homer Dobson officiated. Richard Stelter was organist.

Honorary bearers were Lloyd Goltz, Don Klein, Al Breczinski, Jim Willrett and Jerry McArtor.

Laura Helen Payne was born March 28, 1909 to Frederick and Amalie (Serr) Goltz at Milroy, Minnesota. She attended Milroy public schools and as a young girl worked cleaning houses.

On December 14, 1932, she and Ernest Payne were married. They farmed in the Tracy and Garvin area. In 1959, they moved to Fremont, California. After her husband's death in 1970 she continued to make her home in California until 1993 when she moved with her son to a farm near Walnut Grove, MN.

She worked at Brunswick, Woolworth's and as a cook at a drive-in.

Laura was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Tracy and was a past member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Fremont, CA.

She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and embroidering.

Laura died on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at the Tracy Area Medical Services.

Survivors include one daughter, Naomi Bohringer of Tracy; five sons and their spouses, Merle (Bud) and Betty Payne of Walnut Grove, MN, Dale and Darlene Payne of Valley Springs, CA, Jim Payne of Walnut Grove, MN, Bob and Vada Payne of Austin, TX, Dick and Donna Payne of Tracy, CA; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beatrice Sheffield of Salt Lake City, UT and Pearl Stonebridge of Brentwood, CA; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her parents, husband, four brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.

Burial was in Irvington Memorial Cemetery, Fremont, CA. The Almlie Funeral Home of Tracy handled arrangements.

Genevieve (Jennie) Surprenant, 81

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Sat., Dec. 1, 2001 for Genevieve (Jennie) A. Surprenant at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tracy. Father Brian Mandel officiated. John Schleppenbach was cantor with Richard Stelter as organist.

Honorary bearers were Jason Surprenant, Natasha Surprenant, Amy Norby, P.J. Norby, Presley Norby and Bailey Surprenant.

Genevieve Alvera Surprenant was born December 18, 1919 in Balaton, Minnesota to Walter and Evelyn (Johnson) Lind. She attended public schools and graduated from Balaton High School in 1937. Following graduation she moved to Tracy and worked in many restaurants; namely, Eat Shop, Jud's, Antler Hotel Cafe' and Zeke's. In 1942, Jennie moved to St. Paul and worked for Grand's & Silver Department Store as a floor manager. In 1945, Jennie moved back to Tracy and worked as a clerk at Berg's Jewelry Store and later at the Niesess Jewelry Store.

On November 27, 1945, she and Ernie Surprenant were married at St. Mary's Church in Tracy.

Jennie was a member of the Tracy American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading until she was afflicted with macular degeneration. Jennie also enjoyed going to the lake cabin, visiting with friends and telling it like it was.

Jennie died on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at the Tracy Area Medical Services.

She is survived by her husband, Ernie; two sons and their wives, Jerry and Judy of Champlin, MN and Tom and Weslie of Hovland, MN; two grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and P.J. Norby of Albertville, MN and Jason and Natasha Surprenant of Cottage Grove, MN; two great-grandchildren, Presley Norby of Albertville, MN and Bailey Surprenant of Cottage Grove, MN; one cousin, Dolly Scott of Tracy, MN and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Burial was in Calvary Catholic Cemetery with the Almlie Funeral Home of Tracy handling arrangements.

John Martin

Ethel Moat, 78

Ethel Moat, 78, of Springfield, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Home, Springfield.

Mass of Christian burial is 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Springfield, with burial in the church cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30-10 a.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, Springfield. A CCW Rosary is at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. A parish prayer service will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born April 1, 1923, in Balaton, to Harry and Petrea (Larson) Dwire. She attended Balaton Public Schools, graduating in 1942. She married Walter Moat on Dec. 27, 1951, in Tracy. She moved to Springfield and worked at the Pantry Grocery and Sward-Kemp Drug and did home health care for many years. She was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, St. Annes C.C.W., and John Watson American Legion Post Auxiliary, serving as local president and 2nd District President in 1962.

She is survied by sisters, Edna Bollman of Tyler, Millie Pagel of Balaton, Helen Dennin of Litchfield, and Ellen and husband Isaac Baerg of Gaylord; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Walter in 1993.

Lillian Busch, 89

Lillian Marie Busch, 89, of Fulda, formerly of Brewster, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda.

Services were held on Wednesday, December 5, 2001 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Brewster, with the Rev. Andrew Olsem officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Lillian was born July 18, 1912, in Currie, she was the daughter of Valentine and Catherine Potthoff Ruppert. She married Raymond Busch on June 6, 1940.

She graduated from IHM School in 1930. After marriage, they farmed the Busch family homestead until November 1988 when they moved into Brewster. In 1998, they moved to the Maple View Estate Apartments in Fulda. They then moved into the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in 2000. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Brewster, and belonged to the WCCW, where she served as its president.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Richard (Charlene) Busch of La Quinta, Calif., Raymond (Randy) Busch of Orange, Calif.; three daughters, Bonnie Glende of Anaheim, Calif., Mary (Mike) Kelly of Denver Colo., Sheryl (Michael) Weinandt of Wabasha; one adopted son, Rev. Joe Thalisery of India; three brothers, Ray (Dorothy) Ruppert of Currie, Herbert Ruppert of Currie, Orville (Judy) Ruppert of Farewell; three sisters, Julia (Wayne) Peltola of Currie, Leota (Tom) Silver of Tracy, Marcella Commiskey of Currie; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
